Looking for the magic in the world or just in the ranch dressing? Let’s dive into details that will grant us the power for enlightenment.
Born in the remote Alaskan bush, ranch dressing needed a miracle not to slip out of everybody’s mind who has ever tasted it. It needed persistence, not many times seen among condiments but its humble roots an upbringing proved to be its strength.
Once ranch dressing moved to California, its path to success and fame became clearly visible and as always many tried to imitate it with varying success. As ranch dressing is not being something of a highly processed condiment, we can dip our fingers into its making too.
When ranch dressing was first sold, it was just a mix of spices and herbs meant to mix in with mayo and buttermilk. As times has changed so do recipes and nowadays sour cream or yogurt are also added or simply swapped with the original ingredients.
What’s the magic of ranch dressing?
However, the list of spices and herbs can slightly vary from one recipe to the other salt, garlic, onion, mustard and classic herbs like chives, parsley with dill provide the main character for the ranch dressing.
Although the veil of magic surrounding store-bought dressings will disappear once we understand how to make our own and we will never be as pleased with them as when we were dipped into sweet ignorance, mourn not! Once we understand magic, we will be magicians capable of wielding powers to create flavors one in a million.
Ingredients
- ½ cup / 60ml Mayonnaise
- ½ cup / 60ml Sour cream
- 1 clove Garlic
- 1 teaspoon Dill
- 2 teaspoon Parsley
- 1 teaspoon Chives or Onion
- ¼ teaspoon Salt
- ¼ cup / 50ml Butter milk or milk
How to make Ranch dressing
- Spoon the mayonnaise and the sour cream into a bowl.
- Finely cut the garlic, dill, parsley, chives. In case we use dried ingredients, obviously they don’t have to be cut but double the amount of parsley we use.
- Add the finely cut herbs to the sour cream and mayo.
- Mix everything together then taste and flavor it as necessary. Mind that fresh herbs need a couple of hours in the fridge to let their full flavor out so don’t be hasty pumping it up with garlic. Add buttermilk or milk to the ranch dressing gradually and stop when we reach the desired consistency.
- Fill it into an airtight container and keep it in the fridge until it’s served.

F.A.Q.
What kind of ranch dressing do restaurants use?
It depends on the restaurant. Some just buy a ready made ones others use the one that needs to be mixed with mayo and buttermilk and there are those who make their own from scratch.
Is ranch and ranch dressing the same?
Ranch dressing is supposedly a bit thinner than dip. This is generally achieved by controlling the amount of sour cream is in the sauce. More sour cream will make a thicker sauce resulting a dip while leaving it out completely makes a thin dressing. To make the sauce even more thicker sometimes cream cheese is used too.
What kind of ranch does McDonald’s use?
It’s a proprietary ranch that is specifically made for McDonald’s. Unfortunately, no shops sell it but we can pop into McDonald’s and buy the dressings on their own.
